The incident showed the trio kicking and punching a 20 year old woman. Members of the public intervened but the victim received a bleeding nose and ripped clothing. They say good things come in threes, but for six Nelson mums who attend a rather special Plunket coffee group, it comes

in twos. The mums, and some dads, and their twins, ranging in age from newborn to 21 months, attend the weekly multiple-birth meetings at the Richmond Plunket

Rooms. The group was formed by Community Karitane to support the parents and help address the unique needs of families experiencing a multiple birth.

Debbie Harvie from Community Karitane says the meetings are a relaxed and fun affair where parents can “have a cup of coffee and discuss day to day challenges of raising twins”. She says

it was formed after “we had a couple of mums in Stoke asking about a multiple-birth group” and now it has a loyal following.

Bruce, who managed a restaurant, “quit and got a day job” so he could be at home and help out at night. “Even getting out of the house on time to go somewhere is like a military operation,” Bruce says. Jodie says one of the biggest problems she has encountered is trying to find day care for twins so she can finish the last year of her accounting degree at NMIT. “The NMIT day care has a long waiting list, so there’s not much chance of getting two children in there and it would cost me a small fortune to put them in a private day care.” Debbie says it is quite exceptional to have six sets of twins in the group at the one time, with multiple births making up only 1.5-2 per cent of all births in New Zealand. Last year, there were 808 sets of twins and 11 sets of triplets born in this country. “There seems to be quite a few multiples births in the Nelson area at the moment,” Debbie says. The multiple births group meets at the Richmond Plunket Rooms every Tuesday at 10.30am. Anyone interested can contact Debbie on 544 7554.

Nelsonians love to fly and the new head of the region’s airport says he is determined to give the region an airport to be proud of. Nelson Airport’s new CEO Rob Evans was appointed to the role in December, and he says it’s an exciting time to be appointed with a major expansion project of the airport terminal now underway. Last week, Studio Pacific Architects and Impact Project Management were appointed to the airport’s redevelopment project, a key step, says Rob. “It’s a good step. The reality is these things take time. It could be a year before we start building and two to three years before it will be finished, but it’s important that we consult as we go.” The new terminal will be planned to cope with growth for the next 20 years and Rob says it will include more space, better amenities, better toilets, a bigger Air New Zealand lounge, more efficient check-in and more retailers. He says the car parking at the airport also needs to be sorted but he’s looking forward to

So it’s a great time to be here and I’ve got three to five years of fun ahead of me.” With Kiwi Regional Airlines announcing they will be basing their crew in Nelson and with Sounds Air’s continued growth, Rob says the region is well supported. “In terms of airline companies, the more the merrier, but they need to be profitable. The good thing with KRA is that they’ve said they’ll stick to routes not serviced by Air New Zealand, so that will mean we’ll be

getting new markets, new routes and new passengers as opposed to just cannibalising existing routes. “Air New Zealand has a huge importance here and we need to work closely with them.” With a forecast 760,000 people flying in or out of Nelson Airport next year, Rob says passenger numbers will continue to grow. “It’s important to remember that people don’t fly to an airport. But we have a vested interest in airlines filling up their planes like they do. “Fortunately, we have a really fantastic tourism product, it’s a great part of the world and quite beautiful really.”

Consultation on Nelson’s Long Term plan closes today and one of the hot issues for the Nelson Residents Association is the state of the city’s footpaths. The 12 page submission made by the association highlights several issues it has with the proposal, which plans for the city’s growth over the next ten years. One was the state of the footpaths throughout the region. “Council’s aims to provide an accessible, safe and wellmaintained network of footpaths tend to ring hollowly to many of the elderly, who have had to tolerate many years of zero

paths has been highlighted to Nelson City Council and it isn’t just in the city either. The submission by the residents’ association says the suburbs are just as bad. “[Tahunanui] residents have not seen any maintenance crews upgrading the State Highway’s footpaths for the last forty years. “The Brook and other suburbs have also suffered from neglect of regular maintenance of whatever footpaths they may have.” Submissions for the long term plan close at midday on Tuesday, April 28.

DUN TRACK OPEN: A temporary track has been opened on the Dun Mountain Trail while work on the main track is still ongoing. The temporary track has been formed above the landslide which closed the track between four Corners and Third House in March. The main track is still closed and, as the slip is actively moving, Council say a full reinstatement of the Dun trail is expected to take several months. This is due to the need for Geotechnical design, Resource Consent, and construction works. BOY TOLD TO PEE IN CUP: A man stopped a Nelson College student while he was walking down the street and forced him to urinate into a cup, it is alleged. Police confirmed they are investigating the incident but did not have any further details. Nelson College headmaster Gary O’Shea also confirmed the incident had occurred but was unwilling to provide further information. “A student was approached by a man. The boy is fine and we’re still trying to get to the bottom with police as to what occurred. It’s in their hands now,” he said. STOLEN CARAVAN FOUND: A caravan stolen from a North Rd home last week was recoverd by police at a Richmond home. Jenny and Ian Cunningham own the Avondale Harrier caravan which was stolen Thursday afternoon from their back section property. Jenny says she is glad police found the caravan but is upset that the thieves had trashed it inside and out. “Its an absolute mess, it’s been trashed and had nasty words spray-painted on the side”

while ensuring the work scheduled is affordable and appropriate. “$82 million is the current budget estimate to undertake an appropriate level of flood risk mitigation works,” she says. “Unfortunately, undertaking all of this work in a 10 year period would result in the council breaching its debt and rates caps, so we need to find the right balance in protecting our city in terms of its infrastructure, but also in terms of its budget.” The council’s 10 Year Plan recommends the additional funds are spent on priority works in the central city, (including works on the Maitai River and the Brook, York and Little Go streams), Saxton Creek and other areas, including for minor works and interim risk reduction. There is also funding to cover modelling work on the flood risk for a number of less wellresearched waterways outside the centre of the city, to help design appropriate flood risk mitigation.

An extra $30million is to be set aside by Nelson City Council for stormwater upgrades and flood protection. A review of stormwater and flood protection by the council has identified a shortfall in standard. Recent years have seen several extreme rainfalls, ranging from the city-wide long duration event of December 2011 to the short, high intensity rain events that impacted on quite narrow bands of the city in April 2013 and June 2014. These events led to gravel being deposited in stream and river beds, blocking stormwater pipes and intake structures, and general property damage from slips and flooding. The anticipated cost to the council of recovering from recent storms is $11.5 million after insurance and other cost recoveries. Nelson Mayor Rachel Reese says affordability is key. “There is a careful balance to be struck in providing an adequate stormwater network to the city,

Mother-daughter businesswomen combine for Mother’s Day comp Monique Bergman

Six Nelson business women have joined forces and organised a pamper package competition to celebrate Mother’s Day. The women, who are all mother and daughter business partners, include Nelson Real Estate Agent, Susa Guhl and her daughter Ana Fierek, owners of the Caci Clinic, Paula and Melanie Potter and Ivy Flower Art florists, Yvette and Carolyne Brake. Susa and Ana frequently purchase flowers from florists, Yvette and Carolyne and started chatting one day about how

many mother and daughter business owners there were in Nelson. They all agreed that it would be a nice idea to support other family businesses just like theirs and decided to approach mutual friends, Paula and Melanie to put together a pamper package competition to mark this mother’s day. “It is nice to be able to do it, there are a lot of families in Nelson who work together,” says Susa. Jessie Johnston In the past five years Matt Thomas has been to Nepal three times for the sole purpose of providing aid to locals living in tough conditions. This year was to be his fourth humanitarian journey, accompanied by a group of six others, to build a school in a village in the Baglung region. That was until news of the magnitude 7.8 earthquake tipped their plans upside down. “I think with the Haiti earthquake, and Japan, you see it on the news and it’s quite shocking, but knowing people on the ground is the difference. Having real life connections with around 100 people there, knowing them, knowing their families and the circumstances, and seeing a lot of that destroyed and people killed; its hugely impacting and I guess we’re just wrapped up in shock,” says Matt. The trip is still going ahead but their focus has changed to helping out in some of the worst-affected areas, alongside their local friends and international aid organisations. While the main aim has now shifted to rebuilding homes and minimising the damage that disease will now inflict, the funds for the original school project will be set aside for the future.

“Our original plan was to go for several weeks, but I feel like it’s going to be more of a research trip to see what we can do, so that we can go back and really help. It’s going to be on-going for a long time, big earthquakes like this bring lots of sickness,” says Matt. RSA ‘overwhelmed’ by Anz

Nelsonians turned out in record numbers at ceremonies throughout the region on Anzac Day, leaving RSA district president Derek Nees “completely overwhelmed”. The dawn service at Trafalgar Park attracted around 7000 people, packing out every stand and most of the playing surface. Derek was delighted at the service and quality of the speakers, but says the sheer number of people took them by surprise. “I’m overawed, totally overawed,” he said. “It’s just been totally beyond all expectations. We expected around 4000-5000, I think it’s double that – plus.” While the huge turnout pleased organisers, they say some people couldn’t hear some of the speeches and Derek says they were “unable to cope”. “On behalf of the organisers I apologise for underestimating attendance – it was truly overwhelming. Hence we fell somewhat short in both seating and programme availability. There should also have been a song sheet insert to the programme and if that wasn’t there then that was another shortcoming that will be addressed in future.” The service marked 100 years since the Gallipoli offensive on the coast of Turkey during WWI. That campaign involved Australian and New Zealand soldiers, thousands of whom died. The morning started with a parade from Millers Acre to Trafalgar Park and included returned service men and women, police, army and scouts. Once there, the crowd filled each of the three main stands, with thousands more standing on the playing field. Purple lights lit up the 590 white crosses that were fixed into the turf, each cross representing a Nelson man who died during WWI.

Nelson College student Solly Stephens and Nelson College for Girls student Lucy Upton had obviously spent a lot of time researching their moving speeches. They were about former students of those schools and how the war affected them. The speech of Kutluhan Celik, the second secretary at the Embassy of the Republic of Turkey in Wellington, was another highlight. He said, despite the Ottoman Empire and the British Empire being enemies during WWI, New Zealand and Turkey have always been friends. Other speakers included Nelson RSA president Barry Pont, Nelson Provincial Museum CEO Peter Millward, Nelson MP Nick Smith and Nelson Mayor Rachel Reese. Derek says it was definitely the right call to move the service to Trafalgar Park from the traditional Anzac Park. “Thank God we weren’t trying to do it over there [Anzac Park], it just never would have worked.” He says seeing the Turkish flag flying was a highlight, as was hearing the famous speech by Kemal Ataturk to the mothers of Anzac soldiers recited in Turkish by Kutluhan Celik. “I’ve always heard it in English, I’ve never heard it spoken in Turkish and that was special. In fact, it almost brought me to tears and long may that relationship [with Turkey] continue. “The whole morning has been overwhelming. I’m thrilled, just thrilled.” Other services at Richmond, Brightwater, Wakefield and Mapua also attracted bigger than normal crowds, a trend throughout the country for the centenary commemorations.

Save the Children, Tuesday, April 14: It was a tight fit as people crowded into the Stoke Hall for the annual Save the Children Fair. The major fundraising event has been run since 1975 with the money generated going towards Save the Children projects here and overseas. Around 50 volunteers set up the hall on Friday, before taking their places behind the stalls as buyers flocked to the event. This year the fair raised just over $8000 which will be going towards two projects. The first is working with Barnados at early learning centres in New Zealand and the second is in Nepal, improving the livelihoods of children who are forced to work instead of receiving an education. Artistic Roller-skating, Tuesday, March 24: Mother and daughter artistic roller skaters have returned from taking part in the Oceania Invitational Championships in Australia. Keiko Bamba and fifteen year old daughter Mitsuko Nam, competed in the event, which ran from April 7-10 and involved over 70 skaters. Keiko won a bronze medal in her Masters figure event, a result she says she is very proud of. Melrose Treasure Sale, Tuesday, April 14: The Melrose House Treasure Sale managed to raise around $800 for the continuation of the historic house, a lot less than previous sales which have seen totals of $2000-$3000. The event was run during Heritage Week and everything sold on the day had been donated by members of the public. The money raised through the treasure sale will be put straight back into the preservation of the home. Those looking after the house will also be applying for a grant so they can undertake renovations of the interior.

The speakers were inadequate - all of us standing couldn't hear or see anything, even when we moved back to the temporary seating, it was no better. Long before the service finished, and the parade marched off - a great number of people who were standing just left - no doubt, like the rest of us, disgusted and disappointed. My heart went out to the young families with school children, especially those students who have been doing projects and studies on family members who attended the war - a lot of these children have never attended a dawn parade, they were all complaining that they couldn't see or hear what was going on - what a letdown for them and us all, especially this being 100 years since WWI. Thankfully, the coverage on a lot of TV channels showed the events of WWI and other wars most of the day, and it was noticeable that the big screens were used at a lot of venues. Di King. [I was] playing in the pipe band leading the parade, I think I have only ever missed one in the last 11 years. It was the best one I have been to. I enjoyed listening to all of the personal stories about our war heroes and the atmosphere of being alongside the white crosses amongst

“It’s going to cost us $24,000 so we’ll be fundraising to try and cover those costs,” Nelson SPCA manager Donna Walzl says. “It is a lot of money but it’s got to be money well spent - this will put a huge dent in the cat numbers. “We spend so much time here picking up the pieces and this is something we can do to really help the animals which is why we all got into this job in the first place. It will help us make cats pets and not pests.” Donna says the desexing caravan has been to Nelson four times, with the last

The Nelson SPCA is investing $24,000 in a de-sexing campaign to try and defuse the explosion in the number of unwanted cats, and manager Donna Walzl says it will be worth every cent. The SPCA operates a desexing caravan that tours around the country, it will be visiting the Nelson region in June and July. Donna says people will be able to have their cats desexed for a $20 donation, but the cost to the Nelson SPCA will be far more substantial.

Victory to host youth event

A youth and whanau event will be held at Victory Park this week to deliver a powerful antiviolence message in a positive way to the community. The event, Whakamana Tangata, is organised by community group, Keep Victory Safe. Even though there will be a big emphasis on fun for the whole family, it will also focus on making the community aware that family violence is not okay. “It is an invitation for everyone to come and enjoy a fun evening, while addressing a message that is a hard area to address, in a positive way,” says Gayle Petch, Keep Victory Safe Community Developer. In between the fun activities, guest speaker Vic Tamati, Ladi6’s Dad, will be talking about his experiences with family violence and ways to make a change. Gayle says they are encouraging everyone to come to the park after school and work, to have something to eat and to enjoy the entertainment and talk about building awesome whanau. Master of Ceremony is Victory local, Patariki Hippolite. “I live in the community and my kids go to Victory School, I am part of Whakatu Marae, Phoenix Vixings Rugby League, and my whanau lives in this community. A lot of families here are struggling and we want to look at how to enhance their lives,” says Patariki. There will be a free sausage sizzle for everyone and plenty of entertainment during the evening including Kapahaka groups, Victory Boxing demonstrations, live music, plus hip hop and rap music. DJ Izzy is looking forward to sharing his music which includes a positive antiviolence message, with the community. “My parents live in the Victory area and I work at Whakatu Marae with youth, and some of them are based in this area. Anything I can be a part of that helps youth and families to make them realise their potential is good,” says DJ Izzy. Whakamana Tangata, a free youth and family event, will be held at Victory Park from 4pm to 6pm on Thursday April 30.

Natureland the new home for kakariki Eight kakariki were transferred from the Marlborough Sounds to Nelson’s Natureland Wildlife Trust last week, to help boost the native parrot population in the Abel Tasman National Park. Natureland Wildlife Trust will breed the yellow-crowned parakeet on behalf of Project Janszoon and DOC. Their captive-raised offspring will in time be released into the higher altitudes of the national park, to join the small but growing population of native parrots. Project Janszoon ornithologist Pete Gaze, and volunteers Peter Hale and Ingrid Hutzler, captured the kakariki on Long Island over the last few days. Pete says they are settling in well to their new home and it is hoped they will soon begin breeding. “It is great to have Natureland Wildlife Trust on board as their involvement in our breeding programme will increase the number of juvenile kakariki we are able to relocate to the Park. Natureland has staff who have specialised knowledge in breeding birds for release, so that is fantastic,” he says. Senior keeper Jenny Pettigrew spent seven years breeding endangered macaws for release in

Costa Rica and says the secret to successful breeding is making the birds as comfortable as possible. “Kakariki are prolific breeders and can lay up to five clutches a year with 2-9 eggs in a clutch. A lot of thought has gone into designing a new aviary for them with enough space and plenty

of native trees, so we hope they will be contented, happy, and keen to breed,” she says. Natureland trustee and curator Meg Selby, says Nelson Host Lions Club members spent more than 300 hours building the new aviary that will allow the public to view the very special birds. “It is part of our mission to contribute to conservation in a meaningful way, and it is a pleasure and an honour to be able to help return species to the wild. It is exciting to know we are helping to breed a native parrot that will be released into the Nelson-Tasman region, and that locals will get the opportunity to view them both in the wild and here at Natureland,” she says. Project Janszoon and DOC also work with Lochmara Lodge, EcoWorld Aquarium and Tui Nature Reserve, to breed kakariki. In the last two years, 22 captive-raised kakariki have been released into the upper reaches of the Park to augment a very small existing population of birds. The releases have only been possible because of extensive predator control that should provide safe habitat for the hole-nesting birds.

Edwards was born on 22 October 1894 in Nelson, New Zealand, the son of Thomas and Alice Edwards, of Takaka, New Zealand. On the Auckland War Memorial Museum Cenotaph database his next of kin is listed as Mrs A.V. Moore (mother), Russell Street, Nelson, New Zealand. Edwards worked as a seaman before enlisting for service during World War One. He embarked with the 5th Reinforcements Field Artillery on 13 June 1915 from Wellington, New Zealand for Suez, Egypt. He served for over two years in Egypt, the Balkans including Gallipoli and Western Europe. The last unit he served in was the New Zealand Field Artillery. Edwards died of wounds on 18 October 1917 in Belgium. He was twenty-one years old. Edwards is buried in Zuydcoote Military Cemetery, Nord, France.

Netballers warm up with tournament Monique Bergman

The annual Geraldine Hodgson netball tournament was played at Saxton Courts over Anzac weekend. Thirty-six teams entered in the competition, ranging from junior year 7 school teams through to premier grade. The Grade A competition was still strong despite last year’s Premier grade winners, Richmond, noticeably absent from the tournament. That left no surprises, Jacks OPD and Prices battling it out in the final. The two matches played against each other showed that this year’s competition will be very tough, with a 22-22 score when the teams met during the round and a highly-contested final with Jacks OPD winning by one point on the final whistle. Stalwart Leanne Cook led from

the front at GA and Tineill Stevenson proved strong through midcourt for Jacks OPD. The Nelson College for Girls A team held their own in the Grade A competition, showing good potential for the season ahead. Despite the wet weather on Sunday, competition went ahead and players didn’t seem to notice the drizzle as they enjoyed being back on the court ready for another great season ahead. Results: Grade A, Jacks OPD beating Prices by one point, Grade B, Jacks Pro Netball 16 vs Motueka High School A 13, Grade C, Richmond Sleepers 17 vs Rival Blue Diamonds 12, Grade D, Wanderers Ale House 10 vs Rival Odds & Evens 8, Junior A Golden Bay High School 15 vs Waimea 9A 13 and Junior B winner [based on results] Nayland 9A.

Nelson notch up first win of the season Nelson are on the board. After fives losses on the trot, Nelson has won its first game of the Tasman Trophy senior club rugby competition, beating Harlequins 27-19. The win was one of three for the Nelson teams, which all played a Marlborough-based team in the first cross-over round of the com-

petition. Waimea Old Boys continued its winning ways, beating Renwick 75-5 at Jubilee Park in Richmond, and Kahurangi beat Waitohi 22-14 in Motueka. Marist went down to Moutere 4031 in Blenheim and Stoke were thrashed 41-10 by Central.

It is that time for seasonal winds and rain until winter finally kicks in and we get those frosty, but calm, sunny days that Nelson is renowned for. Now and into winter is when lots of fisher peoples travel further to target transit fish and 'winterized' hibernating schools held in the deeper water areas. This means further distances to tow and also further on the water. So it is very important to consider all aspects relating to this change of season. Eg; boat trailer maintenance, tow vehicles services, and most important, weather predictions. There are some great sites accessible to most for 'guessimating' the upcoming weather patterns. Some good online ones are, Swellmap, Metservice (boating section), tide-forecast.com. What is best is to check a couple of these and estimate an average forecast from that to try and gain an idea of what may happen during the course of the day you wish to go out. Also, look at the night before pattern in case it may run late or have an effect on your morning in the way of residual swells that will still be present. Only endeavour to travel to your experience on your boat, meaning even if you have someone who has boated to those areas before to help guide and advise. The other option is if you know someone more experienced who is taking their boat to the same area on the same day, don't be scared to let them know where you intend to be during the day. This gives a feeling of insurance

Fishing-wise, there are still pannies being caught in close by Pepin and Delaware. Some small brim in and around Kenerpura and Pelorus sound. French pass is fishy also, but with extreme care to be taken. Pretty much any coastline and the outer sounds right out to deeper Groper grounds are worth a look. Another thing to consider this time of year is having the right gear for the job. Rods and reels capable of handling bigger fish from deeper waters. Hand in hand with this is 'Terminal tackle'. This means main line, leaders, rigs, swivels, hooks and, probably most importantly, knots. I hate hearing reports of good fish busting off due to knot failure. These fish will normally die due to carrying around hooks, sinkers and lines attached to them. This can effect their eating and swimming, causing tangling and becoming easy prey for other species of fish.

Fallow stag safari an 'awesome experience'

James Trowbridge hasn’t won a competition so exhilarating. The Stoke man won a hunting trip with Doughboy Safaris in Murchison to shoot a fallow stag. The competition was run by the Motueka Gun Shop. For every $100 spent in the shop last month, shoppers got one entry into the competition. James says it was an “awesome” experience. “It was magic. It was a really, really good day and in a beautiful spot.”

He bought a new rifle which gave him his entry in the competition and he says he felt like he won twice. “I already got a really good deal on the gun so to win this as well was a huge bonus.” James also took his son along, who also shot a deer. He says his buck was a “nice-looking animal” and was good eating. “I’d really like to say thanks to the Gun Shop and the boys at Doughboy, they were all really good. An amazing experience.”

Grandmas on the greens It is estimated a record number of competitors will participate in this year’s annual Grandmothers Golf Tournament.
